Deadly Coup Attempt Foiled in Africa

The President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo updated that a five-hour attack on the government palace was a ‘failed attack against democracy’. It was a failed coup.

The president said he survived an attempted coup after attackers armed with machine guns and AK-47s attacked Guinea-Bissau’s government palace for five hours while the president and prime minister were inside.

The foiled attack came only about two weeks after the military overthrew the elected leader of Burkina Faso, emphasizing fears that a recent sequence of coups is inspiring others in the region.

Before this, five countries have faced coups in Africa alone; Mali, Chad, Guinea, Sudan, and Burkina Faso.

President Umaro Sissoco Embalo said that this was an attack on democracy. He also said that the goons attempted to kill the president, the prime minister, and all the cabinet. He also said that some have been arrested but to him, the exact number is not known.
